How I handle your details

If I have emailed or called you out of the blue, this page explains where I got your details, what I do with them, and how to make it stop. It is short on purpose.

Who I am

I am Jordan Crombie. I run JSC Workshop, a one person software workshop in Bilston. I am the person responsible for the details described here, and the only person who sees them.

What I hold, and where it came from

For businesses I have contacted or plan to contact, I keep a short record: the business name, the contact details it publishes itself, its website address, and my notes about what I found when I looked at that website.

None of it was bought, and none of it came from a mailing list. It came from two kinds of place:

• the business's own website and its own public listings, which is where every email address and phone number I use comes from;
• public registers such as Companies House, which tell me whether a firm is trading and who runs it.

If a contact detail is not published by the business itself, I do not use it to get in touch.

Why I hold it

Because I go looking for small faults on the websites of local firms, the kind that quietly cost them a customer: an address that no longer works, a map that has stopped loading, links somebody else has put on their pages. When I find one I write to the owner and tell them, so that they know. I would want to be told.

My lawful basis for this is legitimate interests: mine in finding the small number of firms that might one day want work doing, and theirs in hearing about a fault on their own website from somebody who can point at it. I only keep what that job needs, I do not use it for anything else, and if the balance does not feel right to you then your objection settles it, not mine.

Who else sees it

Nobody. It is not sold, shared, or handed to any other company. It sits on my own computer, not in a marketing platform, and there are no trackers or analytics on this website.

How long I keep it

Until there is no reason to keep it. If you tell me you are not interested, I keep the bare minimum needed to make sure I do not contact you again by mistake, which is your business name and the fact that you said no, and I delete the rest.

What you can ask me to do

• Tell you what I hold about you.
• Correct it if it is wrong.
• Delete it.
• Stop contacting you, which I will do whether or not you give a reason.

One line by email or a text is enough. There is no form and no account to log into. I will not ask you why, and I will not write again to check.

If I have got it wrong

Tell me first if you are willing, because I would rather know. But you do not have to, and you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at any time at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113.
